If someone were to ask you to name the first game that comes into your head, we would bet that Pokemon would be the game on a lot of people’s lips. This game series, anime Goliath, trading card juggernaut, and supreme merchandise peddler has been around for over twenty years and within this time, the series has never faltered or fallen from the gaming spotlight.

This series has remained relevant, dropping game after game and in doing so, they have kept fans of new generations coming to the series.

However, with this abundance of content and the wide variety of new Pokemon that are added to the series year on year. It can be rather difficult to keep track of the comings and goings. Meaning that you might lose some key knowledge about key Pokemon in the series. That’s where we come in. We have compiled a series of essential Pokemon handbooks, giving you all the information you could ever need about each and every Pokemon within the franchise.

In this guide, we take a look at Skrelp, the dual type poison and water type that evolves into one of the most fearsome dragon-type Pokemon in the entire series. So without further delay, here is everything you need to know about the Pokemon Skrelp.

What Is Skrelp?

skrelp pokemon 1

Skrelp is a poison and water dual-type Pokemon that was first introduced in the sixth generation of the series. This Pokemon in terms of appearance Pokemon looks rather like a sea horse in many ways. The Pokemon has the same body composition as the real-world aquatic animal as well as some blue dorsal fins and a snout.

However, it does have some distinguishing features to set it apart. These are most notably the animal’s leafy/bark-like layer that runs down the back of the creature, resembling rotten seaweed, its piercing red eyes or its three-pronged tail as opposed to a curled tail.

Then in terms of this Pokemon’s natural behavior, this Pokemon is not the most confident aquatic creature within the Pokemon world and far from the best swimmer. It will tend to rely on its ability to camouflage itself to stay out of the way of predators.

This Pokemon tends to hide, live and feed on tufts of seaweed and if attacked, it has the ability to squirt a thick, poisonous ooze at its foes and will then attempt to make an escape. This Pokemon tends to co-exist with its own kind and other Pokemon like Dhelmise.

Skrelp is number 690 in the Pokedex, is about 0.5 meters tall, weighs approximately 7.3 kilograms, has a medium/fast leveling rate, and has a catch rate of 39.9%.

Here is a video showcasing Skrelp in action so you can see exactly what to expect from this Pokemon:

Does Skrelp Appear in the Anime?

Skrelp is one of those Pokemon on the roster that has been starved of air time within the anime series. The Pokemon has only made one major appearance within the anime series. This was in the episode An Undersea Place to Call Home!

This was when Ash and the gang were fishing and they hooked a Skrelp which badly Poisoned Ash’s Pikachu. They later went on to find a group of Skrelp in the wreckage of the SS Cussler. Sadly though, this is the only time this Pokemon has made an appearance. This is perhaps due to the fact that this Pokemon spends most of its time at the bottom of the sea. However, we will perhaps see more of them in some underwater shenanigans sometime soon.

Does Skrelp Appear in Any Pokemon Movies?

Despite only appearing once in the anime series, Skrelp was blessed with the opportunity to play a small role in the full feature-length Pokemon movie, Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction. This was merely a cameo role but it was nice to see that Skrelp was given some more air time and we hope that the future is kind to Skrelp and they get more time on screen.

How Good is Skrelp’s Pokemon Trading Card?

Skrelp’s Pokemon Trading Card

Sadly, Skrelp hasn’t faired too well in the trading card department as well. While some cards from the same generation have six, eight or even ten different cards, Skrelp has only been the subject of four cards. The first was the debut card which appeared in the Flashfire expansion. This card is a basic psychic type card with 50HP and one ability. This is a move called spit poison and it has a 50% chance of inflicting a poisoned status on any opposing card.

The second was in the BREAKthrough expansion and also has 50HP and one move. This move is called hide and allows players to flip a coin and if they call correct, all attacks and status damage caused during that turn are void.

The third appeared in the Forbidden Light expansion. This card has a slightly higher HP of 60 and one move. This move is called Hook and does base damage often.

Then lastly, the fourth Skrelp card appeared in the Cosmic Eclipse expansion and is also a 60HP monster with one move. This move is Poison Breath and has a 100% chance of poisoning an opposing Pokemon.

For our money, the best of these cards is either the Cosmic Eclipse or the BREAKthrough Skrelp, depending on which way you want to play. One is a slow killer while the other is an effective stall, so if either of these style suit you, Skrelp may be of use to you.

How to Catch Skrelp in The Pokemon Games

Skrelp 1

Skrelp may have a relatively high catch rate of 39.9%, but this Pokemon is far from the easiest to catch within the series. This is due to the limited number of games that the Pokemon has been available to capture through a random encounter.

This Pokemon can only be captured naturally in Pokemon Y and Omega Ruby specifically. Plus, you can capture this Pokemon if you have access to the Shield expansion pass. However, aside from this, the player will either have to trade or breed a Dragalge in the case of Pokemon Ultra Moon.

This makes this Pokemon quite a commodity unless you have access to specific Pokemon titles and for this reason, we would say that this is a rare Pokemon within the series.

Does Skrelp Evolve?

Yes, Skrelp evolves into Dragalge, a very strong Pokemon that sheds its water typing and becomes a dragon type Pokemon. This Pokemon is one of the finest competitive dragons in the game and certainly one you would want to have available in battle.

To evolve a Skrelp into a Dragalge, the player will have to train their Pokemon to level forty-eight. Then the Pokemon will naturally evolve so long as they aren’t holding an everstone.

What Are Skrelp’s Base Stats?

Skrelp is the definition of an all-rounder Pokemon that can be trained to be just about anything that the trainer chooses. The only weakness that this Pokemon has is its relatively low-speed stat. However, aside from that, the Pokemon has the same respectable base stat for all categories. Here is a rundown of the base stats for the Pokemon Skrelp:

  • HP: 50
  • Attack: 60
  • Defence: 60
  • SP Attack: 60
  • SP Defence: 60
  • Speed: 30

What Does A Shiny Skrelp Look Like?

Skrelp

Then lastly, we take a look at Skrelp’s shiny Pokemon model. We would love to say that it’s an incredible design but in truth, it’s rather underwhelming. The pink torso color is swapped out for a pale blue and the brown, barky color is swapped for a deep purple.

Other than that, the design remains the same. We are happy to see that there is a clear distinction between this design and the original. However, if you want a shiny that will make you the envy of your peers, we aren’t sure this is it. However, it is a pretty rare one so don’t hesitate to catch it if you get the chance.
