Best Dragonite Nature in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

Dragonite is one of the most well-known creatures in Pokemon and one of the few OG Dragons.

Considering its age, you may think Dragonite has been replaced by newer Pokemon, but this winged beast still packs a punch. Let me show you the best Dragonite Nature and a moveset to go with it.

Best Nature for Dragonite

Dragonite does well with a boost to Speed, so I recommend the Jolly Nature. This Nature lowers our SP.

ATK, but we lean into our regular ATK stat with our moveset. Another popular Nature for Dragonite is Adamant, as it improves our ATK stat at the expense of SP. ATK. As these are both viable, I’ll offer a moveset for each.

I mentioned utility at the start, and Dragonite has it in droves. If you prefer special attacks over physical ones, you can swap Dragonite’s Nature to Timid and remain just as effective.

Best Jolly Moveset for Dragonite

Tera Type: Fairy
Held Item: Lum Berry
Ability: Multiscale

  • Outrage
  • Iron head
  • Dragon Dance
  • Thunder Punch

There’s a ton of synergy in this moveset, so let me explain how it works. Multiscale is a great ability that gives Dragonite 50% damage reduction while at full health. This ability means Dragonite should survive any opening attack.

As Dragonite won’t die straight away, you have time to use Dragon Dance, which increases our ATK and Speed stats. If you’re still safe afterward, you can use Outrage to obliterate your opponent.

This simple combination is so potent that you can sweep entire teams with it. Our remaining moves are there to patch holes in Dragonite’s coverage.

Iron Head is a superb choice, as it means we have a nasty surprise to use against Fairies. The Moveset above recommends Thunder Punch, but other moves like Fire Punch and even Earthquake have uses.

Many Held items work with Dragonite, but my choice is a Lum Berry. As we want to set up with Dragon Dance, the Lum Berry protects us from annoying Status Effects.

Finally, The Fairy Tera Type is fantastic as it dramatically changes our weaknesses and makes Dragonite immune to Dragon attacks. There are countless ways to use Dragonite, but this Jolly-focused build will keep your opponents on their toes.

Best Adamant Moveset for Dragonite

Tera Type: Normal
Held Item: Leftovers
Ability: Multiscale

  • Outrage
  • Aerial Ace
  • Extreme Speed
  • Roost

Dragonite has a decent HP stat, so you can use a more defensive moveset with the Adamant Nature.

Leftovers are one of the best items in the game for bulky Pokemon and pair nicely with Multiscale. On that note, we use the Normal Tera Type as it means Dragonite only has to worry about Fighting types.

Outrage remains a powerful Dragon attack, and Aerial Ace is a solid counter to pesky Fighting Pokemon. To add survivability, Roost is a staple for bulky Pokemon and resets Multiscale. I’ve chosen Extreme Speed for our final ability, as it deals excellent damage if Dragonite Terrastalizes.

Which Moveset Is the Best?

I prefer the Jolly build, as the Fairy Tera Type catches opponents off guard, and the Dragon Dance/Outrage combo is deliciously satisfying if you can pull it off. If you need a bulky Pokemon, the Adamant build above is a fine choice, and Roost/Multiscale shenanigans are obnoxious to deal with.

If you enjoy using iconic Gen 1 Pokemon, why not try Charizard? While not as ‘meta’ relevant, the classic Flying/Fire type can still take names, so be sure to check out our build guide to make your own.
