Pokémon Sun and Moon changed the Pokémon formula a bit. The anime and the games experimented with new ways to revamp and innovate the series. Every new mainline entry brings fun mechanics and great characters into the mix. One of the most loveable characters ever introduced in the Pokémon world is Mallow.

She is upbeat, fun, caring, and a delight to be around. When I first encountered her in Sun and Moon, I knew I was in for a treat. She is a trial captain in the games. Still, in the anime, her personality is explored a bit more, teaching us about resiliency. Her character in the anime is amazing with a lot of potentials but some of it does get wasted since the cast is quite large.

Her drive, work ethic, skills, and persona are all things to rave about. I believe that the Mallow Pokemon character is the most complex character in Sun and Moon and I will tell you everything you need to know about this grass-type trainer and why the Pokémon fandom well loves her presence.

Appearance

Mallow Appearance

Mallow is a tall, tanned green-haired girl with her hair tied in two long twin tails, with the top of the tails having hair at the sides like trees. She has green eyes and wears a large pink flower on the right side of her head, held in place with green vine-like straps.

Mallow wears a pink tank top with faded blue thigh-high overalls with white frills near the leg openings. She also wears a clover-shaped ornament on the right side of her waist and has a berry storing pouch above her chest. She wears white and green shoes with a green bow for her laces. Above all else, the best thing Mallow wears is her contagious smile (I know, okay!).

Alternate Outfits

In the Anime, Mallow changed her appearance while facing the Ultra Beasts. She wears an emerald green outfit with a white chest plate and shoulder pads. It is black edges at the openings and on the sides of the outfit. She wears a simple pink gown when going to sleep.

Personality

Mallow is the poster child for positivity. Her influence in the game was exciting, and I enjoyed her quest line. Still, Mallow showed her true personality in the anime. While seemingly generic at first, they slowly revealed the depth she had as a character and why she cherishes her relationships the way she does.

Mallow is very dynamic and vibrant, so much so that she misses a lot of fine details at times. She also has a strong sense of right and wrong, which means she isn’t afraid to admit her mistake and stands up for what’s right even though she’s quick to jump to conclusions.

She is very caring and maintains a positive relationship with her friends. She can often be seen with Ash, Lillie, or her best friend Lana, supporting them and sharing her happiness with them.

Her caring attitude extends not only to her friends but to her Pokémon as well, and she loves to cook. Hence, she makes meals for everyone but has a peculiar taste herself. The guilt of her mother’s passing and her behavior always burdened her soul.

Still, instead of letting it hold her back, she made stronger bonds and took on responsibilities as a genuine friend. This also means the way she helps around her father’s restaurant even though she’s so young. Her positive, upbeat persona always cheers up the mood, and she has an innate ability to know when her friends are in trouble.

Even though she has a few insecurities that make her doubt herself, she quickly gets back with a push she needs from the people who care about her.

Mallows Pokémon

In the Anime

Tsareena

Mallow has always created deep bonds with her Pokémon. Her most trusted companion is Tsareena, who she caught as a Bounsweet with her mother during their walk through the forest. It is the only known Pokémon that Mallow owns.

After her mother’s passing, Tsareena became a trusted companion that supported Mallow through thick and thin. A Pokémon takes after its trainer; Tsareena is a friendly Pokémon who, like Mallow, does not get discouraged easily. Tsareena also helps Mallow out around her restaurant. Tsareena is responsible and does whatever she can to support her trainer.

Not only is Tsareena strong, but it is agile as well. When it used to be a Bounsweet, it used to evade Rowlet’s attempt to bite. When it evolved, Tsareena became much more robust and mature. Tsareena is Mallow’s companion, just like Ash has Pikachu. Her influence on Mallow allows her to be even more optimistic than she already is.

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon

Mallow appears in the event of Mina’s trial, and she’s a lot stronger than she was before. You’ll need to be a bit more technical, but beating her won’t be a huge hassle. The initial battle isn’t as rough and is quite similar to the later one, so I will write about the Post-Game Pokémon; their levels change from 51 to 60. Tsareena holds Grassium Z even in the initial battle.

Tsareena

It is a grass-type Pokémon and Mallow’s primary weapon. Tsareena is now beefed up with a wide variety of moves and a Z move. The best way would be to use a Fire Type Pokémon since Mallow’s Tsareena is very well balanced. It also holds Grassium Z.

Moves

  • Power Whip
  • High Jump Kick
  • Zen Headbutt
  • U-Turn

Z – Move: Bloom Doom

Battle Tree

Mallow is a captain in the battle tree and can hold various Pokémon. She can be battled against or come on as a partner trainer for Multi Battles, especially in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

In The Manga

The Pokémon Manga always takes a different direction than the anime. Mallow doesn’t come across as Bounsweet as she did in the anime, but her relationship is still strong. Her only known Pokémon is seen with her as a Steenee, first used in the Lush Jungle to find the Mirage Berry, their trials against the captains and the battles on Exeggutor Island allowed it to evolve into a Tsareena.

Mallows Journey

In The Anime

Mallow as a Child with Mother

Mallow, in the anime, is shown to be a caring and upbeat girl that helps out at her father’s restaurant while her brother Ulu is out on a cooking journey.

Her arc in the games and manga is slightly different than in the anime. Mallow’s mother in the anime is shown to pass away due to an illness that deeply scarred Mallow. Especially so because as a young child, Mallow grew tired of her mother’s endless apologies and yelled that she hated her.

Soon after, her mother passed away, and she never had the moment to reconcile with her mother. This development shaped how she behaved in the anime and introduced new depth to the character.

Mallow was the first one to introduce Ash to Samson Oak (Professor Oak’s brother) and also introduced Ash to everyone in the school. She exclaimed that she wanted to make Aina’s Kitchen (Her family restaurant) the best in the world and worked hard at cooking for that purpose. But such a strong work ethic also comes with stress and frustration. Mallow once ran away from the restaurant she worked at and accidentally met an Oranguru who helped her out.

Reconciliation

She also joined Ash in becoming an Ultra Guardian to protect the Island from distant threats. The friendly, upbeat girl truly had her moment in the episode “Memories in the Mist.” She learned about Tapu Fini’s ability to reunite people with the souls of those they cherish that have passed away.

Mallow, at first, did not want to see her mother but was forced to reunite with her mother due to Tapu Fini’s mist. At first, she profusely apologized but realized the way forward, stopped apologizing, and thanked her mother for being with her as much as possible.

The encounter initiated the events, which led Mallow to encounter a wild Shaymin who was attracted to her because of her feelings of gratitude. The Pokémon took her emotions in and then flew away.

Mallow keeps strong relationships with her friends, and when she visits Oranguru, she helps him out at the shop. One of her customers was Tapu Koko, who gave Mallow Grassium Z after she fed him the special burger she made.

During the Battle Royale event, Mallow was among the trainers taking part in the event. She reached the top 16 to become a part of the match-up rounds. Her first opponent was Lana, a good friend that managed to defeat Mallow.

The Journey Ahead

When everyone went their separate ways, Mallow was supposed to stay at her restaurant and work hard for her dreams.

Mallow was left alone but was greeted by Ulu, her brother, who had finished his cooking journey. She also said her farewell to Shaymin, who then flew away. Mallow can be seen in Pokémon journey’s organizing a welcome party for Ash and happily trying to raise the bar of her restaurant and succeeding.

In The Games

Mallow in Pokemon Sun & Moon

Mallow is a trial captain in the main Pokémon Moon and Ultra Moon series. She is found in Heathea City, where she registers your ride page with the Stountland Search. Her trial asks you to gather ingredients that result in attracting the Totem Pokémon, Lurantis.

Mallow loves to cook and can be seen on the second floor of the restaurant in Konikoni City. She plans to take over her family business. After completing her foraging quest, the player can also battle Mallow in the Lush Jungle. Mallow is usually in her room at the restaurant during day time.

In Ultra Sun and Ultra moon, she is seen having an Aromatherapy session along with other Pokémon during Mina’s Trial.

In the Manga

Mallow is shown traveling with her friends Lana and Kiawe to Heahea City to meet Sun (One of the main Protagonists), who is taking part in the Island Challenge. Mallow is a strong companion to Moon (The other protagonist); they help Tapu Lele fight Xurkitree in the Lush Jungle. Later, when Moon needs training, Mallow calls upon Luranitis to help Moon get stronger.

She was in the team in charge of stopping the Ultra Wormholes and realized that Team Skull had a massive part in their appearance. She was first outmatched by the strength of the Ultra Beasts and didn’t stand a chance. Mallow, along with the other trial captains, trained on Exeggutor Island for Six months for a rematch. When a wormhole opened, the captains were ready. They managed to defeat the Ultra Beasts, bringing peace back to the Islands of Alola.

Mallow In The TCG

Mallow appears in the Guardian rising series as a Full Art card. The Japanese rarity of the card was Uncommon, but the English rarity was Super Rare. The ability was to search your deck for two cards, shuffle it, and then put those cards on top in any order.

Mallow also appears in the Mallow and Lana card for the Cosmic Eclipse series. It features a full art card and a regular version with an Uncommon Japanese variant. Its English rarity is Super Rare. The card allows you to switch one of your active Pokémon with one of your benched Pokémon. You may discard two cards from your hand whenever you play this card. If you discard two cards, you can heal 120 damage from the Pokémon you moved to your bench.

Notable Relationships (Mainly Anime)

Mother

Mallow had a loving relationship with her mother. The latter was very empathetic towards leaving her daughter alone because of her sickness. Mallow’s mother used to go on long walks with her and caught her a Bounsweet that is now a Tsareena, Mallow’s trusted companion.

Even though their relationship was loving, Mallow threw a temper tantrum towards her mother because of her sickness. Soon after, she passed away. The guilt always rested within her, but with the help of Tapu Fini’s mist, Mallow could reconcile with her mother and thanked her for what she did for Mallow and for loving her.

Abe

Mallow and her father have a loving relationship even though he isn’t fully able to understand his daughter. Mallow ran away from the restaurant because she felt uncared for and taken for granted, but they were able to patch things up. Mallow is eager to take over the family restaurant and is working hard for its success.

Ulu

Mallow is very close to her brother, whom she holds in very high regard. He often goes on journeys to master the art of cooking and sends her unique recipes that he learns. She does get annoyed with his charmed state whenever he encounters a woman, but even with that, she loves him, and Ulu supports her.

Lana

FAQs

Question: Why is Mallow said to be wasted potential by the fans?

Answer: She might be one of the most complex characters in the Sun and Moon series but the only actual moment she received was her moment with her mother due to Tapu Fini’s mist. Mallow is the only one of Ash’s companions to have deceased parents, and her upbeat personality shows tenacity. This makes for a very well thought out character with a strong arc.

Still, very few episodes focused on her development since there were many characters in the series. The only character that has a deceased parent has to work at the restaurant to achieve her dreams and help her father while also attending and doing well in school makes for a powerful persona. It is wasted potential, but let’s hope she might join Ash as a companion in the next series if Pokémon brings back the adventure style.

Question: Why did Mallow stay on Mele Mele Island?

Answer: Her dream was to make Aina’s Kitchen a success, and her brother was already on a journey to be a better chef so that she couldn’t leave the restaurant behind. Her brother Ulu is shown to be back from the journey at the end, so after learning his techniques, there is a chance that Mallow might go on a journey of her own.

Question: Does Mallow catch any other Pokémon?

Answer: Not that we know of; in the games, Mallow is shown to have three Pokémon, but in the Manga and the Anime, Mallow only has one. Tsareena is her trusted companion throughout the series. She doesn’t catch other Pokémon because her goal is to be the best chef, not a Pokémon master. She is shown to care for other Pokémon and make friends with them, like Shaymin, who she took care of for a while.
